LIST PICK

PREGOBLIN ANNA (FLOWERS WON'T GROW)

Having lurked under the radar since the release of their left-field dancefloor filler ‘Combustion’ earlier this year, surfacing almost exclusively for a smattering of support slots with their comrades Fat White Family, PREGOBLIN have returned with a long-awaited recorded version of their set list highlight ‘Anna (Flowers Won’t Grow)’. Written initially by songwriter, vocalist and of course one half of PREGOBLIN Alex Sebley, in the fall out of a big breakup, the track is an ode to sculptor Anna McDowell, who's powerful pieces often serve as a visual representation of anxiety and depression. Made all the more hopeless and beautiful by the follow up line "flowers won't grow" Sebley explains: "The line :flowers won’t grow" is about commitment, belief, perseverance and wanting to patch things up with the person I loved, knowing deep down that it was probably not to be.” Elevated by the enviable vocals and production skills of band mate Jessica Winter, the chorus hits particularly hard, almost winding you with its bone-shaking bottom end and tastefully funky instrumentation.
